A brief history of the “Shawon-O-Meter”

May 31, 1989 – Dave Cihla painted a bed sheet which was shown on WGN during a Cubs/Braves game in Atlanta. Once back home this inspired a brainstorming session with friends Jim Cybul and Melinda Lehman to create a follow-up sign to display at Wrigley Field. Dunston had just crept above .200 (.203 to be exact) for the first time that year and Jim suggested “Shawon-O-Meter”. The “Shawon-O-Meter” made its debut on June 5th, 1989, in a game versus the New York Mets. After that 4-game series a new, stronger “Meter” was made. That “Shawon-O-Meter”, signed by Arne Harris, Harry Caray & Shawon Dunston, is in the Smithsonian Institution. The Baseball Hall of Fame has version #2 and The Chicago History Museum has version #3.
